The Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh will leave on a three-day visit to Myanmar today. Dr Singh's visit comes at a time when Myanmar is undergoing a transition towards a democratic polity and an open market economy. During the visit, a slew of agreements and memorandums of understandings, MoUs, are expected to be signed between the two countries to provide a boost to bilateral relations. These include bilateral cooperation in the fields of security, connectivity, infrastructure development, trade, investment promotion and capacity building.

Initiatives are likely to be taken to enhance people to people contact through cultural exchanges, visits of pilgrims and tourists and university level contacts. There is also a proposal of launching Imphal-Mandlay bus service.
