PM leaves for US; To address UNGA session during his stay

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has left for the United States for his five-day visit. He will be arriving in New York on Friday.

During his stay in US, he will address the 69th session of UN General Assembly in New York on Saturday and then travel to Washington on 29th September where he would hold bilateral talks with US President Barack Obama.

In New York, the Prime Minister is scheduled to meet business Community, Civil Societies, Governors of three US States and Mayors of the major US cities. Mr Modi will have one to one meeting with CEOs of major companies including Boeing, IBM, General Electricals and Goldman Sacchs.

The Prime Minister is also going to address vibrant Indian Community at Madison Square Garden on Sunday. Over 18 thousand Indian-Americans will be gathering for the event. Almost all of the states of India will be represented at the event.

America houses largest number of Indians anywhere in the world. Indian Americans comprise about 2.81 million people, about 1% of the US population.

AIR correspondent reports that there is a great deal of excitement that the economic relationship between the two countries is going to be very different than it has been in the past.

US business leaders are expected to meet Mr Modi in New York and Washington. They are looking at India with renewed interest as Mr Modi has promised to slash red tape and spur growth.

For India,partnership with the US looks very lucrative as the GDP of the US is
almost nine times our GDP and per capita is 33 times ours. At present the two-way trade between India and the US is over 100 billion dollars annually. The US is also India’s leading defense partner, with over 10 billion dollars in defense trade.

It is also the largest customer base for India’s software industry, contributing to40-45 billion dollars to our software exports every year. A large number of US corporations depend on our software industry to help them in building their information systems.

It is expected the visit will result in convergence in India-US ties and the out come will be great.
