PM leaves for Saudi Arabia trip

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is leaving for Saudi Arabia today on a three day official visit. Briefing the media about the visit, the Secretary, (East), MEA Ms. Vijaya Lata Reddy said during the visit, the Prime Minister will have substantive discussions with King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz and several Saudi ministers will call on him. Ms. Reddy said Dr. Singh is to address the Shoura Council which is a unique honour bestowed upon select dignitaries. Answering a question on counter-terrorism, she said India will take up all issues that concern it during this visit.<br/>On the eve of the visit, Indian Ambassador to Saudi Arab, Talmiz Ahmad told AIR correspondent that apart from economic cooperation and energy security, the terrorism and cooperation in security with special reference to the situation in Afghanistan and the West Asia region will be the key issues that India and Saudi Arab are likely to discuss during the visit.<br/><br/>It is expected that Riyadh and New Delhi will sign agreements including an extradition treaty, the transfer of sentenced persons and on scientific cooperation. MoUs on cooperation in peaceful use of outer space and cooperation in IT and services will also be signed. The Prime minister will wrap up his three-day visit to Riyadh on Monday immediately after meeting the Indian community.
