PM leaves for New York tomorrow to address UNGA

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh leaves New Delhi tomorrow on a five day visit to New York, to attend the United Nations General Assembly Session. Dr Singh will address the UNGA on the 24th. At the session, India will push for reforms of the Security Council and early adoption of a convention on terrorism.

Prime Minister is accompanied by External Affairs Minister S M Krishna, National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon and Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai.

During the session, India, along with other members of the G-4, Brazil, Japan and Germany will work towards getting permanent membership in the Security Council. New Delhi would also call for greater mobilisation of resources, including honouring of Official Development commitments, and policy action for attaining the Millennium Development Goals.

The Prime Minister during his interaction with world leaders will also discuss on the need for affirmative action to meet the global economic and financial uncertainties. Dr Singh is also likely to have a series of bilateral meetings with various heads of governments on the sidelines of the UNGA.
