Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has left for Khazkhstan a short while ago after successful completion of his China visit. Earlier, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – the BRICS group of countries called for a revamp in the global monetary system and signed a pact to use their own currencies in issuing credit or grants to each other. The path-breaking agreement was signed at the 3rd BRICS summit at Sanya attended by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Presidents Hu Jintao of China, Dilma Rousseff of Brazil, Dmitry Medvedev of Russia and Jacob Zuma of South Africa. In the joint declaration adopted at the end of the summit the grouping supported broad based international currency system providing stability and certainty to the system. BRICS nations also pledged their support for India’s quest for permanent membership to the UN Security Council. The declaration adopted at the end of the summit said that the grouping reaffirms the need for a comprehensive reform of the UN including its security council to make it representative, effective and efficient reflecting the contemporary realities. Taking a unanimous stand against the intervention in the West Asia, north and West African regions, the summit expressed grave concern over the turbulence in these areas and opposed use of force. In their restricted session, the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and four presidents deliberated on the international situation and the financial development, climate and security issues. Dr. Singh held bilateral meetings with the president’s of China, Russia, Brazil and South Africa in a bid to deepen and diversify the partnership with emerging economies of the world. AIR correspondent covering the Prime Minister’s visit reports that in his meeting with Hu Jintao, the two countries decided to set up a mechanism to address irritants on the border issues besides resuming the high level defence exchanges. In the meeting with the Russian President the discussions centered on the nuclear safety apart from further intensifying partnership in the Hydro Carbon sector. Dr. Singh in his discussions with Brazilian President Dilma Vana Roussef mooted the proposal to revive the joint CEO’s Forum to realize full potential of economic partnership as the bilateral trade stood at just 8 billion US Dollars and set up joint projects in information and high technology areas. The discussions with the South African President Jacob Zuma focused on enhancing trade further with a revised target of 15 billion Dollars to be achieved by 2012.Mr. Zuma extended invitation to his counter part Pratibha Devi Singh Patil to visit his country next year and invited UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi to participate in the ANC’s centenary celebrations.
