PM leaves for India; BRIC nations call for greater role for India, Brazil in UNs

The Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh today left for home wrapping up his two-nation tour of US and Brazil. During the 8-day tour, he attended Nuclear Security, IBSA and BRIC summits besides meeting a number of world leaders, including US President Barack Obama. With ash cloud from Iceland's erupting volcano creating havoc for flights in northern Europe, Dr Singh is taking a detour and his special aircraft will now have a stopover in Johannesburg in South Africa rather than at Frankfurt. He will reach home tomorrow afternoon.<br/> <br/>Earlier, the leaders of the BRIC countries called for a greater role for India and Brazil in the United Nations. The United Nations needs to be more representative of its member countries. China and Russia are already permanent members of the UN Security Council. In a joint statement released at the end of the BRIC summit in Brasilia, they vowed to resist protectionism and make efforts to trade in local currencies.
