PM launches Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Swachh Bharat Abhiyan from Valmiki Basti in New Delhi this morning. Later addressing a huge gathering at Rajpath, Mr Modi said Mahatma Gandhi's dream of clean India is still unfulfilled.

He said the Father of the nation, gave the message quit India, Clean India.
The Prime Minister asked citizens to change their mindsets as cleaning is not only the responsibility of safai karamcharis.

He said Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is beyond politics. It is inspired by patriotism and not politics. Mr Modi called for starting the campaign on social media as well. He said constructing more toilets is extremely important as he himself is pained seeing women defecate in the open.

On the occasion, the Prime Minister also administered a cleanliness pledge to the people. Later, he flagged off a walkathon as part of the campaign.
AIR correspondent reports, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan includes sweeping, removal of garbage, debris and unauthorised encroachments from the roads, markets and residential places.
The campaign is aimed at making India a clean country by 2019, the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
