PM in Berlin: Trade and beyond on agenda

Co-operation in the field of high technology, trade, investment, energy and culture will be the focus of the summit level talks between Prime Miniter Dr. Manmohan Singh and German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin. Dr. Singh left Brussels for Berlin a short while ago. He will also meet the President of Germany, Christian Wulff. Major Regional and global issues will also come up for a review. These include situation in Afghanistan, climate change, the state of global economy and the role of G20 in the recovery process. Earlier, India and the European Union decided to fight jointly the menace of terrorism.In a joint declaration, adopted at the 11th India-EU summit in Brussels, India and the 27-country bloc condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. They also denounced those who sponsor, abet and instigate terrorism and provide terrorists safe heaven. They underlined that cooperation in combating international terrorism including, cross border terrorism, one of the key priorities of India-EU strategic partnership.Addressing a joint press conference along with President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy and President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso after the summit, the Prime Minister highlighted the issue.India and the EU have also decided to redouble efforts for an early bilateral trade and investment agreement. Dr. Singh said a balanced agreement would bring enormous benefits to both the sides and the interests of small farmers and shopkeepers in India would be protected.Commerce Secretary Rahul Khullar later told the media that a directive had been given by the leaders of both sides to complete the negotiations at the earliest. He said more than 50 per cent was already done and the aim was to conclude the remaining negotiations by March next year.A meeting of Indian Business leaders with EU, a cultural agreement with the European Union and bilateral meetings with the Belgian leaders were held to enhance mutual cooperationOutside the summit venue, protestors from various parts of Europe had gathered to demand that the EU should not undermine India’s potential to sell affordable drugs especially in Europe and Africa. The organiser of the protest Julia Hill told AIR news in Brussels that affordable drugs from India save lives of people suffering from AIDS. Meanwhile, CPI has reiterated that the Government should take diverse section of opinion on board before negotiation Indo-EU free trade agreement. In a press statement issued in New Delhi today, the party said that the issue should be also discussed in Parliament.
