PM holds bilateral meetings with Iran-Japan, host of bilateral issues discussed

Giving details of the bilateral meetings held by the Prime Minister with the Presidents of Iran, Sri Lanka and the Prime Minister of Japan, the Foreign Secretary said the entire gamut of bilateral issues came up for review. Mr Mathai said, India and Japan will continue discussions on the civil nuclear co-operation. He said dedicated freight corridor and other infrastructural projects aided by Japan were discussed. Mr Mathai said Japan favoured that G-4 nations should continue consultations on expansion of the UN Security Council. On talks with the Iranian President, Mr Mathai said the situation in the region, West Asia and North Africa came up for review. Situation in Afghanistan was also discussed. In reply to a question, he said India supports an Afghan led inclusive process. Mr. Mathai said it was also decided to convene a meeting of Joint Economic Forum soon. Replying to a question, he said the Iran- Pakistan- India Gas Pipeline project did not come up for discussions but development projects on the whole were discussed. He added that the resettlement and rehabilitation process of displaced Tamils in Srilanka was also discussed. On India US meeting on the margins of the UNGA, the Foreign Secretary said that a meeting between External Affairs Minister SM Krishna and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is being worked out. Giving details on the BRICS foreign ministers meeting Mr. Mathai said Libya and Palestinian issue was discussed and preparations for the forthcoming meeting of the grouping in New Delhi in March next were also reviewed. Climate change also figured prominently with the stress that developing countries must have access to modern technology and funds for mitigation.
