PM focuses on extensive development cooperation between India & Bhutan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described the bilateral relations between India and Bhutan historic and declared to expand the ties between the two countries.

Mr. Modi, who called on Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and later met the premier, Tshering Tobgay, expressed satisfaction at India being considered a privileged partner of Bhutan.

AIR correspondent reports that the primary focus of both the meetings was the extensive development cooperation between the two countries and measures to enhance the economic ties.

The Prime Minister called for greater economic ties and a more responsive Indian financial assistance to Bhutan.

He suggested doubling the scholarships provided to Bhutanese students in India and offered help in setting up a digital library of two million books and periodicals in the Himalayan nation.

On the opening day of his two-day visit to Bhutan, the Indian PM also inaugurated the new Supreme Court building in Hejo, which was constructed with funding from the Indian government.

Welcoming the Prime Minister Chief Justice of Supreme Court of Bhutan said that the building is a symbol of Indo Bhutan friendship.

He said the presence of Narendra Modi on this occasion sends a resounding message around the world that Bhutan and India friendship is primary and no obstacles can hinder their mutual journey towards enhancing the well being of people.

AIR correspondent reports that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived Sunday morning at Thimphu. He was given red carpet warm welcome at Paro international airport of Bhutan.

Mr. Modi will address tomorrow the Joint Session of the Parliament of Bhutan and and will lay the Foundation Stone of the 600 MW Kholongchu Hydropower Project.
