The Prime minister expressed hope that the Food Security Bill, now before Parliament will be passed shortly. The legislation will benefit 75 percent of rural and half of urban population. Under the law, about 81 crore Indians would be entitled to receive rice at 3 Rupees per kg, wheat at 2 Rupees per kg and coarse grains at 1 Rupee per kg. Terming the food security bill as the largest effort of its kind in the whole world Dr. Singh said this law could be implemented only because of the hard work of farmers. Food-grain production reached a record level of 25.9 crore ton in 2011-12. The Prime minister said, the minimum support price for minor forest produce has also been approved to enable the tribals to get remunerative prices for their produce they collect.
