The Prime Minister today asserted that for achieving nine percent GDP growth in the 12th Five Year Plan, the energy needs of the country are bound to increase.Addressing a function in New Delhi today to mark the National Energy Conservation Day, he said since the country relies on imports for a large component of its energy requirement, it is vital to redouble the efforts to enhance energy efficiency. He called for special focus on energy efficiency of thermal power plants.Dr. Manmohan Singh said that the government is committed to increase the proportion of clean energy. He added that, the national solar power mission will produce 20 thousand mega watts of solar energy by 2020.The Prime Minister said that the National Mission on enhanced energy efficiency will lead to annual fuel savings of equivalent to 23 million tones of oil, coal, gas and other petroleum products. He said, this will also help in reducing green house gas emissions.The Prime Minister complementing energy efficiency initiatives, also said efforts are afoot to promote energy efficiency in appliances, buildings and industry. Dr. Singh said the focus is on energy savings by consumers and industrial units accounting for 35 percent of the total energy consumption. He added efforts are being made to improve energy efficiency in residential lighting and agricultural pumping as well.
