The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on Monday discussed the current situation in the Kashmir Valley at a high level meeting in New Delhi.The Chief Minister Mr Omar Abdullah and all the members of the Cabinet Committee on Security were present at the meeting which deliberated on administrative and political measures required to restore normalcy in the valley. The meeting came in the wake of fresh spell of violence in the Kashmir valley.Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said that the cycle of violence in Kashmir valley must end before political steps are initiated.Addressing media in New Delhi today, Mr. Abdullah said that it is inherently a political problem and certain long term steps by the Centre and the state are in the pipeline but these measures can be taken only after normalcy is restored. He said that sustained engagement with Hurriyat is also possible after the situation becomes normal.He also talked about the need for augmenting the paramilitary forces.Mr.Omar said that when the people take law into their hands, there are consequences. He appealed to the people to stop attacking government property, police and security forces and allow the government to take necessary steps.According to sources Mr. Omar raised issues including the need for additional forces and initiating internal and external dialogue. The meeting came a day after the CCS met to take stock of the latest situation and discussed measures needed to defuse the present situation in the Valley.The government will make a statement in Lok Sabha today or tomorrow on the situation in the Kashmir valley. Sharing the concerns of the members over the violent incidents witnessed in parts of the valley since the 11th of June, the Home Minister Mr. P. Chidambaram said that Jammu and Kashmir is a sensitive state and the problems there are well known.He said that the situation has taken a serious turn on 30th of last month though there was a lull after July 19th. He informed the House that he has been in touch with the State Chief Minister who has arrived in the capital to discuss the issue with the senior leadership.Earlier, raising the matter during zero hour the Senior BJP leader Mr. L.K. Advani expressed serious concerns over the situation saying there are signs of violence and anarchy in the valley. He said that the government must take the House into confidence about what steps it is taking to restore peace in the valley.Echoing similar sentiments, the JDU leader wanted a statement by the government and wanted to know how the Opposition could help in the circumstances.Describing the situation in the valley as grave the CPIM leader Mr. Basudev Acharia stressed the need for dialogue. He said that the people in the state have lost faith in the state government and the central government should take steps to restore autonomy that has been eroded.He also demanded that a parliamentary delegation should be sent to Kashmir to know and assuage the feelings of the people saying that there is a deep alienation of the people in Srinagar and other areas.The Samajwadi party leader Mr. Mulayam Singh Yadav said that none of the governments at the Centre have been able to win the confidence of the people in Kashmir and consensus should be evolved to achieve this.
