PM dedicates Bharat-Oman Refinery to nation

The Prime Minister today dedicated to the nation a world-class at Bina in Sagar District of Madhya Pradesh. The refinery with a capacity of producing 6 million tonnes a year is set up by Bharat Oman Refineries Ltd as a joint venture with 26 per cent equity participation by Oman Oil Company and about 1 per cent by the state government.Inaugurating the refinery Dr.Manmohan Singh said India is on track to ramp up refinery capacity by 27 percent by next year to cross 238 million tonne capacity. He said the production was just 62 million tonnes in 1998 but it has gone up to 187 million now. The country is not only self-reliant in refining crude oil for domestic consumption, but is also exporting these petroleum products in a big way. Dr.Singh said the project will raise the revenue of the state government and provide employment to 5,000 persons, creating opportunities for downstream industries as well.The Prime Minister expressed hope that new hydrocarbon sources found in Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh recently will fulfill the crude requirement of Indian refineries. Efforts to find newer sources of crude including deep sea exploration, shale gas and tar sands will be intensified.Dr. Singh said the project is an example of cooperation in many areas between Oman and India and hoped that it will further strengthen the bilateral relationship.Addressing the function, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas S Jaipal Reddy said the Bina Refinery is equipped with world-class technology and has the flexibility to process all types of crude oil.State Governor Rameshwar Thakur, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Union minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Jaipal Reddy and the Ambassador of Oman in India Sheikh Humaid Bin Ali Sultan Al-mani were present
