PM convenes high-level meeting on Bt brinjal?

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has convened a meeting of Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, Science and Technology Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh to discuss the Bt-brinjal issue today. The meeting follows concerns raised by Mr Pawar and Mr Chavan on the moratorium of Bt-brinjal announced by the Environment minister after public consultations. Our correspondent reports, Mr Pawar in a letter to Prime Minister wanted clarification on the authority responsible for granting final clearnance to genetically modified crops. He said in his letter that the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee had also approved commercial cultivation of Bt-Brinjal. Mr Prithviraj Chavan has said Bt brinjal is safe but has not directly opposed thye moratorium saying that he was not opposed to more tests.
