An all-party meeting will be held today to evolve the consensus on Lokpal issue. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh discussed the issue with the United Progressive Alliance leaders yesterday. Briefing mediapersons, Home Minister P. Chidambaram said after the meeting the leaders of the alliance arrived at a broad consensus on the Lokpal issue.
He said that they discussed the parliamentary standing committee report on the Lokpal and the approach for the all-party meeting. The Home Minister was hopeful that the all party meeting would be productive and would reach conclusions on the amendments to the draft Lokpal bill and bring it before Parliament.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Law Minister Salman Khurshid, Parliamentary Standing Committee on Law and Justice chairman Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office V. Narayanasamy were present at the meet. Nationalist Congress Party leader Sharad Pawar, DMK leader T.R. Baalu and other leaders also attended the meeting.
Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister exchanged views with the UPA Chairperson, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi and his senior Cabinet colleagues to fine-tune the strategy of the party on the issue. Government has announced that it will bring the Bill for approval in Parliament on the 20th of this month.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee that looked into the draft Bill, has made several recommendations. The Opposition has been pressing for bringing in its ambit the Prime Minister and lower bureaucracy.
