PM constitutes IMG on Amritsar-Delhi-Kolkata industrial corridor

The Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has constituted an Inter-Ministerial Group-IMG to begin the preparatory work for an Amritsar – Delhi – Kolkata Industrial Corridor in Northern India. The six member IMG will be headed by the Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion. A Prime Minister's Office release said , the IMG will examine the feasibility of setting up the Corridor along with the structural and financing arrangements required to operationalise it. It will submit its report within a month.

AIR correspondent reports that the Corridor is expected to give a push to industrial development in Northern States. The Corridor will cover Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. This is one of the most densely populated regions in the world and houses about 40 per cent of India's population which needs a major push for industrialization and job-creation.
