The Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh said, India expects to achieve 8 per cent growth in next fiscal and to 9 per cent thereafter. He said, this year the country hopes to achieve 7.2 to 7.5 per cent economic growth. Replying to the debate on the motion of Thanks to the President's address in Lok Sabha, he said, the way India dealt with the impact of the global economic crisis and failure of the South-West monsoon was praise worthy. He said that macro-economic fundamentals of the economy are strong, and if the country manages the economy well, there is no barrier to India's entry in the age of double digit growth. Dr Singh said, Government has been worried by the behaviour of food prices in last one year and added that steps have been taken to give relief to the people. He said, India has not allowed large scale unemployment to emerge as a problem in the country. The Prime Minister added that there is need for more investment in education, health, rural and urban infrastructure. On the naxal problem, he said, government is determined to tackle the menace and is ready to talk to any group that abjures violence unconditionally. The Prime Minister also announced ex-gratia relief of 2 lakh rupees to next of kin of each of those killed in Pratapgarh stampede.
