Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has condoled the death of noted Ghazal singer and Urdu poet, Mehdi Hassan. Expressing deep grief over the passing away of Mehdi Hassan, Dr. Singh said, Mr. Hassan through his songs, brought the sub-continental Sufi sensibilities to life. The Prime Minister said, the influence of Mehdi Hassan's passion for Urdu poetry and initial grooming in Dhrupad tradition earned him a special place in the world of music. Dr. Singh extended his condolences to the bereaved members of Mehdi Hassan's family.

BJP President Shri Nitin Gadkari has expressed grief and sorrow on the death of Ghazal maestro Mehdi Hassan. In a condolence message, Mr. Gadkari has described Mehdi Hassan as one of the most versatile Ghazal singers in the entire Indian sub-continent.
