PM condemns attack on Sharad Pawar

The Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has condemned the attack on Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar. Dr. Singh talked to Mr. Pawar after the incident. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee condemned the attack and said that it should not be publicised. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal described the attack as a cowardly attempt to undermine the democratic institutions.

Leaders across political parties condemned the assault of Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar by a youth in New Delhi. While condemning the attack Congress party spokesman Manish Tewari said it is an attempt to gain cheap publicity and demanded severe punishment for the accused.

Talking to reporters outside Parliament, Pawar's daughter and Lok Sabha MP Supriya Sule termed the incident as regrettable and urged her party workers not to react aggressively. Trinamool Congress leader Sudeep Bandopadhayay called for exemplary punishment to the accused. Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj also condemned the incident.

Describing the accused as a lumpen man, NDA Convenor Sharad Yadav said such acts weaken the fight against corruption and price rise. Condemning the assault, CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury said it shows people's growing frustration against inflation. CPI leader Gurudas Das Gupta said that the assault is against democratic norms. SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav said that the guilty should be punished. Meanwhile Mr Sharad Pawar has said that the incident should not be politicised. On being asked whether the guilty should be punished, he said that law should take its own course.
