PM commissions indigenously built warship INS Kolkata

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today commissioned India’s largest indigenously built warship INS Kolkata at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai.

Defence Minister Mr. Arun Jaitley and the Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral R K Dhowan were present.

Terming INS Kolkata as Floating Technological Marvel, the Prime Minister said that the warship proves India’s indigenous capabilities and intelligence and sends a message across the world.

He said that to ensure peace India has to modernize its armed forces, which will act as a deterrent.

He, however, said that India does not want war, but the country has to be alert.

The Prime Minister said that in the age of science and technology, intelligence and security is of utmost importance.

Commissioning of INS Kolkata will ensure safety of not only Indian seas but also the people of India, he added.

Defence Minister Arun Jaitley described the commissioning of INS Kolkata as a historic day for the nation.

He said with its commissioning, the strength of the Indian Navy will increase multifold.

The 6,800 tonne Kolkata class warship is constructed by the Mazagon Docks Ltd, Mumbai and has been designed by the Navy’s Design Bureau.

The keel of the warship was laid down in September 2003 and the ship was launched in 2006.
