Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh today said censorship on media is not an option and there should be complete independence of media from external control. Dr Singh called upon the Journalists to exercise self regulation to combat the ills like paid news in the media.
Addressing a function to commemorate 130 years of the 'Tribune' in New Delhi, the Prime Minister said that the media is an essential pillar of democracy and it has an important role to play in exposing corruption and other ills in the polity and society. Praising the journalists for their balanced and responsible reporting, Dr Singh cautioned them against sensationalisation and trivialisation of issues. He also called upon the media faternity to highlight India's growth story.
Dr Singh said that media should also advise and reprimand the government when it goes wrong.
Dr Manmohan Singh said that the media has the onerous responsibility of informing and educating the public, keeping a watch on the government and highlighting the issues of critical national interests.
The Prime Minister said that India is being looked upon at the global level and a vibrant media is crucial for the country's development.
