PM calls upon scientists to ensure highest safety standards in use of nuclear energy

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has called upon the scientific community to ensure highest safety standards on the use of nuclear energy. Addressing the closing ceremony of Diamond Jubilee year of the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics in Kolkata this evening, Dr. Singh said that the nuclear energy will play an important role in our quest for clean and environment friendly energy to push forward development process. The Prime Minister said that his government is in the process to expand the civil nuclear energy programme and also asked the scientific community to enhance the safety of our nuclear reactors. Mentioning the government's policy in the field of science and technology, Dr. Singh said that higher investment in research and development should be accorded high priority across the economy to attract more youngsters towards science and research. Referring to the contribution of Prof. Meghnath Saha for the country's advancement in science, the Prime Minister said, it is our collective duty to identify young talent, train them well and provide them an environment which is conducive to advanced research and discovery. Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, West Bengal Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee also spoke on the occasion.
