Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has called upon the scientific community to enhance the safety of nuclear reactors and ensure the highest safety standards on the use of nuclear energy. Addressing the closing ceremony of Diamond Jubilee year of the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics in Kolkata last evening, Dr. Singh said the nuclear energy will play an important role in our quest for clean and environment friendly energy to push forward the development process. The Prime Minister said his government is in the process of expanding the civil nuclear energy programme. He said more investment in research and development should be accorded high priority to attract more youngsters towards scientific and research. Referring to the contribution of Prof. Meghnath Saha for the country's advancement in science, the Prime Minister said, it is our collective duty to identify young talent, train them well and provide them an environment which is conducive to advanced research and discovery. Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and West Bengal Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee also spoke on the occasion. The Prime Minister will deliver Golden Jubilee Lecture of the Indian Institute of Management in Kolkata on Monday morning. In the afternoon Dr. Singh will inaugurate the Diamond Jubilee celebration of 57th Annual Convocation of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in West Midnapur district. AIR correspondent reports that this is the first visit of the Prime Minister after the new government came into power in the state.
