PM calls for urgent tackling of malnutrition problems

The Prime Minister has called for urgent tackling of the malnutrition problems in the country. Presiding over a meeting on nutrition challenges in New Delhi, Dr. Manmohan Singh said that levels of under nutrition continue to remain high inspite of a number of programmes to meet this challenge. He said that the rate of reduction in under nutrition has been disappointingly low which Dr. Manmohan Singh said is simply not acceptable. The need to prepare a multi-sectoral programme to address the maternal and child nutrition in 200 selected districts at the meeting which discussed in detail all issues related to nutrition. The strengthening and restructuring of ICDS was also stressed with special focus on permanent and lactating mothers and children under three.
