The Prime Minister has called for a thorough investigation into the complaints of irregularities in the Commonwealth Games related projects. He said, those found guilty should face severe and exemplary punishment. At a meeting convened by Dr.Manmohan Singh to review the preparedness for the commonwealth games yesterday, it was decided that the Committee of Secretaries headed by the cabinet secretary will continue to review the implementation and it will have the status of an empowered committee and jurisdictions over matters relating to the organising committee. According to Prime Ministers' Office, the organizing committee of the Commonwealth Games will take appropriate steps urgently to complete all pending preparations. The cabinet will be briefed on the state of preparation on a weekly basis. The Prime Minister himself has decided to visit selected venues of the Common Wealth Games in the last week of this month. The Group of Minister for Commonwealth Games headed by the Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy has been asked to meet immediately and frequently thereafter. The group will be empowered to take all decision necessary for the smooth conduct of the games. It will refer any matter that may require further consideration for the Finance Minister for a final decision. The cabinet Secretary has been directed to liaise with the GoM to ensure effective coordination. The Prime Minister observed at the meeting that there have been slippage in the time schedule and deficiencies in some works. He said that the public has a right to know the facts and the Group of Minister will ensure timely and authenticated release of information to the public on the state of preparations. The Prime Minister said that the eyes of the world are on the country as it hosts the prestigious event and it was an occasion not only to celebrate sporting excellence but also the spirit of camaraderie among the Commonwealth fraternity. Dr Singh urged all concerned to work single mindedly so that the games could be held in a manner that the nation could be justifiably proud of. Sports Minister M.S. Gill, Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy, the Delhi Lt Governor Tejinder Khanna and Chief Minister Sheila Dixit and Chairman Organising Committee of the games Suresh Kalmadi attended the meeting. Cabinet Secretary KM Chander Shekhar and Home Secretary G.K Pillai also took part.Our correspondent says that the meeting came in the wake of questions being raised about the state of preparedness about the Commonwealth games and allegations of corruption. Top brass of the Congress including Dr. Manmohan Singh and Mrs. Sonia Gandhi had discussed the issue threadbare at the meeting of the Congress Core Committee met in New Delhi on Friday.
