PM calls for strict vigil on coastline to thwart terrorists

The Prime Minister has called for strict vigil on the coastline as the terror groups are still maintaining the ability to use sea route. Dr. Manmohan Singh also pitched for greater cyber security and a strategy to prevent misuse of social media for propaganda.

Addressing the annual conference of DGPs and IGPs in New Delhi on Saturday, Dr. Singh said while there are increasing infiltration attempts across the Line of Control and International Border, indications are that terrorist groups are maintaining their ability to use the sea route.

Therefore, Vigilance needs to be exercised not only on land borders but along the coast line as well, he said.

The Prime Minister disclosed that a new security structure is being prepared by the government to prevent threats to cyber security. He said the country's vulnerability to cyber crime is escalating and large-scale computer attacks can have potentially devastating results on the country's economy and infrastructure.

He said the use of bulk SMSes and social media to aggravate the communal situation is a new challenge.

Dr Singh said, there is a need to fully understand how these new media are used by miscreants.

He called for devising a strategy to counter the propaganda carried out in social networking sites but without infringing the rights of freedom of expression of the people.

On Naxalites problem, the Prime Minister said the ability of Left wing extremists to gradually increase their numbers and military potential in the seven affected states in the country is a cause of worry.

Prime Minister honoured Olympic medal winners M C Mary Kom and Yogeshwar Dutt . AIR correspondent reports, both the medal winners were awarded 22 lakh rupees cash each and given a plaque by the Prime Minister.

An announcement was also made at the gathering that Mary Kom, who was till now a Deputy SP in Manipur Police, has been promoted to the rank of Superintendent of Police. Mary Kom won a bronze medal in boxing in the recently concluded London Olympics and Dutt had bagged a bronze in 60kg free style event
