PM calls for promoting unity & harmony for uniting people

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today called for promoting unity and harmony for uniting people. Replying to the discussion on Commitment to India's Constitution as part of the 125th Birth Anniversary celebration of Dr B R Ambedkar, Mr Modi said in the Rajya Sabha that there is a need to walk together rising above political considerations to strengthen the country.<br/><br/>He said, the Indian Constitution is a guiding principle and source of inspiration for the country and it should be celebrated and the spirit behind it must reach the future generations. Mr Modi said, the country cannot forget or ignore the exemplary contribution of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. Recalling the contribution Dr Ambedkar, the Prime Minister said, the Constitution is not about laws only but it is a social document. <br/><br/>Earlier, Communication and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the NDA government is working with a motto sab ka saath-sab ka vikaas. Participating in the discussion, Mr Prasad said in the Rajya Sabha that people have given mandate to the NDA and the government is working in its own style. <br/>Admitting that poor and downtrodden are suffering and the government is committed to address them. Without referring to controversy over the National Judicial Appointments Commission, the Minister said judicial independence and judicial accountability, both are of equal important for the government. <br/>Earlier in the morning in the resumed discussion, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Independent said Indian Constitution is one of the greatest Constitutions in the world and the people are proud of it. He said the discussion on the Constitution is uniting all political parties. <br/><br/>K C Tyagi of the JD(U) said there should be discussion on the caste system and religious conversions. He said the dream of Dr Ambedkar, the architect of the Constitution, was the uplift of the poor and downtrodden people. Derek O'Brien of the Trinamool Congress asked all political parties to give preference for women candidates in the legislatures without waiting for the passage of the Women's Reservation Bill.<br/><br/>Later the House adopted a resolution re-affirming commitment to continue to uphold and maintain the sanctity and supremacy of the Constitution. It also resolved to continue to respect the Constitutional institutions, their freedom and authority and protect the sovereignty, unity, plurality, integrity and socialist and secular character. The Lok Sabha has already passed a similar resolution on Friday after a two day debate on the issue.
