PM calls for partnership between Centre and States to achieve goal of population stabilisation

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh favoured bringing the issue of population stabilisation back to the national mainstream and finding ways additional to political methods to do it. Dr. Singh called for a holistic approach to deal with the issue. Speaking at a meeting of National Commission on Population in New Delhi, held after a gap of five years, the Prime Minister said that there is a need to have a joint partnership between states and the Centre to achieve the goal of stabilisation of population. He directed Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, who was also present in the meeting, to initiate measure where the centre and state could work jointly for the purpose. National Commission on Population was set up in 2000 to monitor and give directions for the implementation of the National Population Policy.
