PM calls for increase investments in Agriculture

The Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh today called for increasing investment on agriculture research and development needs by two to three times by 2020. Addressing the 83rd foundation day of Indian Council of Agricultural Research in New Delhi, Dr Singh asserted that the country needs a second Green Revolution that is broad-based, inclusive and sustainable to achieve self sufficiency in food. The Prime minister called upon the agricultural scientists to integrate their research to the farmers needs to increase foodgrain production. He said, India has set a target of achieving foodgrains production of 280 million tonnes by 2020-21. Dr Singh underlined that government took several initiatives in the last seven years to boost agricultural production and productivity.He said country's agriculture sector is set to grow 3 per cent during the 11th five year plan period. Dr. Singh, however added that the country still depends on import of pulses and edible oils. He said that Krishi Vigyan Kendras have a very important to play in the growth of the country's agricultural economy. Saying climate change is a major challenge to agriculture, the Prime Minister focussed on the initiatives taken by ICAR and other government institutions to meet this challenge. This includes National Mission for sustatinable agriculture. Dr. Singh said for increasing agricultural performance, protection of crops and farm produce against new and emerging diseases and careful application of bio-technology, improving productivity are important and immediate areas of attention. Apart from this, he said, it is important to enhance the incomes of farmers. Speaking on the occasion, Agriculture minister Sharad Pawar said, country's foodgrains production has touched record 241 million tonnes in 2010-11 crop year. Earlier, the Prime minister gave Krishi Karman awards jointly to Punjab and Uttar Pradesh for producing over 10 million tonnes of foodgrains in a year.
