The Prime minister has called for greater coordination between the intelligence agencies and enforcement agencies to counter the ill effects of poaching which is posing a major problem affecting wildlife conservation efforts. Addressing the meeting of the National Board for Wildlife in New Delhi yesterday, Dr Manmohan Singh said, the demand for body parts and derivatives of wild animals is posing a serious threat to conservation efforts and these illegal trading networks have cross border linkages. He said, the Centre is assisting the States in strengthening their anti-poaching operations. He urged for strengthening International cooperation including joint efforts with China, Nepal and Russia for tiger conservation to break the nexus between poachers and illegal wildlife markets. The Prime Minister said, the Centre is in the process of drafting amendments that would give a role to Gram Sabhas and Gram Panchayats in scheduled areas in the declaration and management of Protected Areas. He hoped to approve these amendments soon and introduce a Bill in Parliament.
