PM calls for dedicated work to achieve 20000 MW through solar power by 2022

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has called for working single mindedly for realizing the target of 20 thousand megawatt of solar power by the end of 2022. He asserted that this is achievable and will to a great extent, reduce India's dependence on fossil fuels and help in reducing green house gases. <br/><br/>Launching the 'Solar Mission' at a function in New Delhi on Monday, the Prime Minister urged the Industry to join hands with the government for its successful implementation.<br/><br/>Dr. Manmohan Singh called for creating 'Solar valleys' on pattern of 'Silicon Valleys' which will become hubs for solar science, engineering, research, fabrication and manufacturing. The Prime Minister expressed confidence that solar energy will be the next scientific and industrial frontier in the country after atomic energy, Space and Information Technology.<br/><br/>Addressing the function, the Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Dr. Farooq Abdullah announced that government owned power companies will get an equal amount of thermal and solar power which will lead to a much cheaper tariff to the consumer. <br/><br/>He urged the state governments to meet their renewable power purchase obligation which is mandatory now. <br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports that scientific community working in the field of solar energy, NRIs interested in investing in this sector, captains of industry and policy makers are participating in the day long deliberations to prepare guidelines for the implementation of the national mission for reducing green house gases and meet the growing energy demand. <br/>
