‘PM calls for affordable and speedy justice for common man

The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh today reaffirmed the government's commitment to judicial reforms and continued efforts for easy, affordable, speedy justice for the common man. He has also asked the state governments to initiate immediate action to operationalise the Act to set up Gram Nayalays. He said with this the country will have more than five thousand fast track courts at the intermediate Panchayat levels which will bring justice to the doorsteps of the people.<br/><br/>Speaking at the National convention on Law Justice and common man in New Delhi, Dr. Manmohan Singh said that the strength of the legal system in the country is diminished by the huge number of pending cases at every level. He said that this is not the only issue to be resolved as there is a need to delete or amend certain laws which have ceased to be relevant and pruning and streamlining the procedural laws.<br/><br/>He also pointed to the need for sensitivity and care in dealing with the vulnerable and marginalised sections of society. He said that the powerless in the country lead to be empowered with their basic rights.<br/><br/>In her address the Congress President Mrs. Sonia Gandhi called on the legal fraternity to educate the people about their rights and help in empowering them. She referred to in this context to various rights including the Right to Information, Right to Employment, Right to Elementary education and the commitment on the right to food security.<br/><br/>The Secretary of the Legal Cell and Human Rights Department of AICC witch has organised the convention urged the Prime Minister to set up an atonomous statutary body, Rajiv Gandhi Center for Voluntary Dispute Resolution to regulate the domestic and international Arbitration, Mediation, Lok Adalat and Legal Aid to reach to the common man at grass root level.
