PM calls for achieving 9-10% growth

The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh today called for achieving 9 to 10 per cent growth to move forward. He asserted that rapid industrialisation is the need of the hour to address the issue of unemployment. Addressing an award function in New Delhi this evening, Dr Manmohan Singh said it will also help in eradicating poverty, disease and ignorance. He said this is also important for the country to have its proper place in the comity of nations. The Prime Minister urged the captains of industry to adopt green technologies for a low carbon economy. He said, a panel has already been set up at the Planning Commission to prepare a roadmap for sustainable development of the country. Dr. Singh said that the per capita consumption of steel is very less in the country and this needs to be increased manifold. It is at present 46 kilogram per capita, while at the global average is 190 kilogram. He, however, cautioned that the use of coal in the steel industry will have to be gradually replaced for addressing the concern of global warming. Dr. Manmohan Singh presented awards to two steel plants of Visakhapatnam and Bhilai for their outstanding contribution.<br/>
