Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday said the All party meeting has been called to achieve a meaningful consensus on the Lokpal Bill. Speaking to reporters on side lines of the Padma Award function at Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Prime minister exuded confidence that the differences on the Lokpal bill can be overcome through fruitful discussions and a consensus can be achieved cutting across party lines.
The meeting will be held at the Prime Minister's residence on Friday afternoon. The Parliament is also not meeting on Friday due to festivals like Gudi Padwa and Ugadi. AIR correspondent reports, the Lok Sabha has already passed the Lokpal Bill, however in the Rajya Sabha the Rajya House was adjourned amid a din on December 29 .
In reply to a query on the additional financial burden due to roll back of the hike in passenger fares in the Railway Budget, Dr. Singh said the new Railway minister has promised that it will not have any effect on the budgetary estimates. Dr. Singh said, the Railway minister has also promised to make up for the loss through advertisements and disposal of land.
On media reports of audit raking up a scam, the Prime minister said, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has clarified that there is no report. Dr. Singh asked, what was there to clarif when there was no report. The Prime Minister said the CAG has written a letter and the PMO has released a part of the letter.
The Prime Minister said India's voting in favour of US Resolution on Srilanaka in Geneve was in line with its stand. Dr. Singh said New Delhi has to weigh pros and cons. He said, India does not want to infringe on Sri Lanka's sovereignty but New Delhi's concerns should be expressed so that Tamils get justice and dignity.
