The Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has promised all necessary steps to ensure the safety and security of students from the Northeast studying in the national capital.<br/><br/>In a letter written to the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO), the Prime Minister has expressed anguish over incidents targeting people from the Northeast in Delhi. The Prime Minister said he had directed the authorities concerned to take special measures for the physical security of the North East students studying in New Delhi and take stern action against the culprits.<br/><br/>Informing this to media persons in Guwahati, the North East Students’ Organisation’s adviser Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya has said that the assurance came in response to a memorandum submitted to the Prime Minister recently by the organisation demanding safety and security of the North East students studying in Delhi and surrounding areas.<br/>The NESO had written to the Prime Minister after the murder of a teenaged Naga girl from Manipur on October 25 last year allegedly by a PhD scholar from IIT which triggered widespread protests by students from north east region.
