PM assures of highest safety standards in Nuclear Plants across nation

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh renewed Government's commitment to maintain highest safety standards in the nuclear power plants across the country. In a letter written to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister on the Koodankulum Nuclear Power plant issue, Dr Singh said there will be no compromise on safety aspects and livelihood in the pursuit of nuclear energy programme.

Dr Singh said that Koodankulam project has gone through detailed and exhaustive safety reviews and clearances have been given by all statutory authorities. The Prime Minister stated that nothing will be done that will threaten the safety or livelihood of people.

He said that a number of welfare projects have been implemented by the Nuclear Power Corporation in the areas adjoining the plant. These projects are in the field of education, roads, drinking water, health and community support. The Prime Minister also said that tapping all energy sources and diversifying the energy mix is important to meet the growing energy demand in the country.

A 22 member delegation comprising of political leaders and activists of the People’s movement against Koodankulam Atomic Power project in Tamil Nadu had met the Prime Minister today who assured to set up a Committee to look into safety aspects of the project. Talking to reporters after the meeting CPI Leader D Raja said the Prime Minister informed that the Committee will consist of representatives from the Centre, the State and members protesting against the project.
