PM assures of ‘corrective action’ on Coalgate

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has said issues raised in the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report over coal block allocation would not be “swept under the carpet” and necessary “corrective action” would be taken.

Talking to media persons outside Parliament after both Houses adjourned sine die on Friday, he said the Centre had always been willing to debate the CAG report in the Public Accounts Committee or even on the floor of the House, but the Opposition chose not to take advantage of institutional practices and disrupted Parliament.

Unhappy over washout of Parliament sessions, Dr. Singh said obstructionist politics amounted to total negation of democracy and was hurting efforts to revive growth besides weakening the country.

Dr. Singh asserted that Parliament could have debated more important issues like Naxalism, ethnic violence, terrorism and economic situation in the country.

He said the Centre was trying its best that the country did not get affected by the economic crisis, which the world was presently going through. Dr. Singh asked his Cabinet colleagues to accelerate decision making process to tide over major economic challenges for returning to high growth path.

Meanwhile, the Government has reiterated that no coal block allotment will be cancelled before completion of investigation by the CBI. Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal said an Inter-Ministerial Group was also looking into the matter and its recommendations were awaited. He alleged that the BJP was trying to divert the attention of people from its alleged misdeeds by disrupting the Parliament and making demands for cancellation of allotments of coal blocks.
