PM asks to spread message of bill for constitutional status to backward classes commission

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said, it is a matter of regret that Constitution Amendment bill to accord constitutional status to the OBC commission could not be passed in the Rajya Sabha despite general consensus among all parties.

Addressing the OBC MPs of BJP, who had gathered to thank him for the passage of the bill in Lok Sabha, the Prime Minister said, this bill will ensure justice to backward classes and will also help in their social empowerment. He said, it is surprising that the bill was not passed in the Upper House in this session.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, BJP General Secretary Bhupender Yadav said, the Prime Minister also asked the MPs to spread the message of the bill and make backward classes aware about it.

The Rajya Sabha had yesterday referred the Bill to the Select Committee after opposition forced the government. The committee has been asked to submit its report by the last day of the first week of the next session. Once the Bill is passed, states will not be able to add or delete castes from the backward classes' list without
Parliament's approval.
