Today is World Environment Day. The day is observed every year on 5th of June to raise global awareness to take positive environmental action to protect nature and the planet Earth.

In his message, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked the nation to take a pledge to collectively work towards conserving the precious environment resources, adding that the Earth should be kept clean and green. In a tweet, Mr Modi said, this day is a commitment to protect the environment and live in harmony with the nature. In the 21st edition of Mann Ki Baat programme on All India Radio last month, the Prime Minister had called for protection of the environment saying that conservation of water and forests are people's responsibility.

AIR correspondent reports that several programmes are being organised all over the country to mark the occasion.

Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar has urged citizens to plant a sapling on this day, click photographs and share it on the website wedselfie.nic.in. Addressing an event organised on the occasion in Mumbai, the Minister laid stress on urban forestry. He also said massive tree planting will be taken up in 200 cities. Mr Javadekar said that shoot at sight orders have been given to armed forest guards at Kaziranga which has helped reduce rhino poaching considerably. The Minister released a leaflet on Living With Leopards and CDs on Vulture Conservation.

The theme of this year's World Environment Day is Go Wild For Life. The aim is to stimulate interest in all species under threat and promote zero tolerance for the illegal trade in wildlife. The United Nations has called for a worldwide campaign to take strong action to curb the illegal trade of wildlife products that are threatening the biodiversity of the planet. Elephants, Rhinos, Turtules and Whales are just some of the species that are mercilessly being killed and smuggled for their meat, fur, skin and tusks. This year's World Environment Day celebrations are hosted by Angola, a country seeking to restore its elephant herds, conserve Africa's biodiversity-rich wildlife and safeguard the environment as it continues to rebuild after more than a quarter-century of civil war.
