The Prime Minister has asked farmers to double the agricultural output to ensure food security. In his convocation address at the G B Pant Agriculture University at Pantnagar, Uttarakhand yesterday, Dr.Manmohan Singh said farmers should also be paid remunerative prices and the country must aim at achieving four per cent annual growth in agriculture production from the present 2 percent. Advocating for higher investment in the agricultural sector, Dr.Singh called for reforming farm markets. He said, economic growth has to be inclusive but it cannot happen if farmers, especially those who are small and marginal, are not benefitted from it.

Complimenting the G B Pant University, which is completing 50 years of its inception, Dr Singh, however, felt that there has not been any really big breakthrough in agricultural technologies since the Green Revolution of the late 1960s. This is a big challenge for the Indian Council for Agriculture Research, agricultural universities and scientists. Dr.Singh said India commands about 2.3 per cent of the world's land area and about 4 per cent of the earth's fresh water resources. But it feeds about 17 per cent of the world's population. This puts tremendous pressure on India's resources and calls for newer and better technologies.

About alien species threatening the delicate balance in Himalayas, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh stressed on conserving the endemic fauna of the fragile ecosystem in upper reaches of Uttarakhand and promoting traditional crops.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank, who was also present , asked the Prime Minister to extend the industrial package for the hill state. He said it is very crucial for its industrial growth.
