PM asks China to reconsider its approach on vexed issues affecting bilateral relationship; 24 pacts signed; India extends e-visa facility to China

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stressed the need for China to reconsider its approach on some of the issues that hold the two countries back from realizing full potential of their ties. In a joint statement issued after his talks with the Chinese Premier in Beijing, Mr. Modi said he suggested that China should take a strategic and long term view of the ties between the two countries. The Prime Minister said, he found Chinese leadership responsive to contentious issues between the two countries. Mr Modi said, both the countries have reiterated their commitment to make all efforts to maintain peace and tranquility in the border region and agreed to continue to explore a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable resolution to the boundary question. The Prime Minister said both the countries should continue to manage differences with maturity, seek solutions to outstanding issues, should be sensitive to each other's interests and strengthen mutual trust and confidence. He said Chinese leadership was receptive on issue of trade imbalance as he raised the issue with them. He said, both the countries have decided to expand bilateral relationship beyond Delhi.Chinese Premier Le Keqiang said China is ready to take measures to address trade imbalance with India. Mr Keqiang said both the countries share the commitment to regional stability. The Premier said we need to seize the opportunity so that India and China play a bigger role in Asia and beyond.India and China have signed 24 agreements for bilateral cooperation in several areas including economy, trade, science and technology and culture. These agreements include enhancing cooperation in Railways, mineral and mining sectors, space, tourism, trade, vocational education and skill development. Both the countries will also establish Additional Consulate General. Both the countries have also agreed to establish China-India think tank forum and three sister cities. Several agreements were signed to strengthen cooperation in the fields of trade and investment and other fields for establishing relationship at the provincial, city and municipality level between India and China. The MoUs facilitate establishment of relationship between Karnataka and Sichuan, Chennai andChongqing, Hyderabad and Qingdao and Aurangabad and Dunhuang.Briefing newsmen, Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar said India and China agreed to set up a high power task force to resolve issues pertaining to Indian exports to China. He said the task force will look into all issues faced by Pharma, IT, manfufacturing and agriculture sectors in exporting their products to China. Mr Jaishankar said the Prime Minister raised the issue of trade deficit during his talks with Chinese President Xi and the task force will take measures to address this issues.Addressing a press conference after signing of agreements, Foreign Secretary said, the signing of 24 agreements by China and India reflects the growing bilateral cooperation between the two countries. He said the Prime Minister had substantive talks with the Chinese leadership on several issues and both countries decided to move forward for mutual cooperation. He said both sides have agreed to establish hotline between the heads of military of both countries to increase defence cooperation. Doordarshan and China Central Television – CCTV have signed an agreement for exchange of television programmes related to art, culture and development. Prasar Bharathi CEO Jawhar Sircar, who signed the agreement on behalf of India in Beijing today, said that the agreement enanbles both Doordarshn and CCTV to share programmes on their networks free of cost.Addressing students of Tsinghua University at Beijing, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India has decided to extend electronic visa facility to the Chinese nationals. He called for an early solution to the boundary issue with China. Mr Modi said the issues that lead to hesitation or distrust and do not allow us to realise the full potential of partnership, must be addressed. The Prime Minister said he has proposed resumption of clarification of Line of Actual Control and said it can be done without prejudice to position on boundary question. Prime Minister gave an overview of the recent policy initiatives on better governance. He said the government will ensure that land acquisition does not become a barrier to growth or a burden on farmers.Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang attended a unique event of Yoga and Taichi fusion performance at the famous Temple of Heaven in Beijing this evening. The 10 minute performance was done on a single musical tune by over 100 participants. Addressing participants, the two leaders highlighted the common features of Yoga and Taichi and how they bring balance and harmony in life. Mr Modi thanked China for co-sponsoring the United Nations resolution on the World Yoga Day on 21st June that had received an unprecedented support of 177 countries and was passed in a very short period. Prime Minister Modi has since arrived in Shanghai from Beijing, the third Chinese city on his schedule. He will have interaction with top Chinese businessmen tomorrow and will address India China Business Forum. He will also address members of Indian community before departing for Mongolia.
