PM asks armed forces to be ready for invisible threats

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said full scale wars may become rare but military strength will remain an instrument of deterrence.

Addressing the annual Combined Commanders Conference in New Delhi on Friday, Mr. Modi said “force” will influence behaviour of others towards India.

The threats may be known, but the enemy may be invisible, he said.

The prime Minister also underlined that domination of cyber space will become increasingly important and control of space may become as critical as that of land, air and sea.

The Prime Minister said India has to be prepared for a changing world which demands new thinking on economic, diplomatic and security policies.

Mr Narendra Modi stressed that an atmosphere of peace and security is essential to enable India to achieve its goal of economic development.

AIR correspondent reports, the Prime Minister assured the Armed Forces with providing adequate resources to ensure full defence preparedness, overcome shortages and meet modernization needs.

Mr Narendra Modi noted that beyond the immediate, the country is facing a future where security challenges will be less predictable and technological changes will make responses more difficult to keep pace with.

Saying that full scale wars may become rare, Mr Modi said the force will remain an instrument of deterrence and influence others' behavior.

Observing that domination of cyber space will become increasingly important, the Prime Minister asked the armed forces to be ready to face the enemy which will be invisible.

AIR correspondent adds that Mr Modi also asked defence establishment including the armed forces to reform procurement processes and suggest corrective measures to avoid delays in indigenous development and production of defence equipments.

Mr Modi urged the armed forces to focus on efficiency and economy in the use of resources and military assets.

He asked them to do it by greater integration and sharing of resources among the services and draw long term acquisition plans, keeping in view availability of resources future operation requirements and technology trends.

Mr Modi exhorted the three services to give serious thought to technological skills for effective projection of power by the men in uniform.

He urged the three wings of the forces to work as a team all the way from the lowest rank to to the top.
