PM arrives in New York on 5-days US visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives in New York tonight on a 5-day visit to the US with a vision to start a new chapter in the strategic partnership of the two countries.

Mr Modi will begin his day tomorrow with paying tributes at the 9/11 Memorial and museum, followed by meeting United Nations Chief Ban Ki Moon at the UN Headquarters.

The Prime Minister will address the 69th session of United Nations General Assembly, UNGA.

The theme of the UNGA is delivering and implementing a transformative Post-2015 development Agenda.

India will call for concerted multilateral action to meet the challenges like fragile global economy, terrorism, Ebola health crisis, climate change and poverty.

India is also campaigning in a big way the need to reform the UN Security Council. External Affairs Minister Sushma Sawaraj has met foreign ministers from several countries individually and in groups like IBSA, BRICS and G-4.

Another highlight of the first leg of Prime Minister's stay in the US will be a grand public reception on Sunday at the Madison Square Garden in New York.

AIR Correspondent reports from New York that the Indian-American community is busy giving final touches to the preparations for the event.

The Indian diaspora has come together on an unprecedented scale to honour Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a community reception which will see over 20, 000 people attending it.

People are coming by chartered flights, buses and trains, besides driving down to New York from all over America and Canada.

Thousands of people are expected to watch the reception from a large monitor set up on Times Square and in video relays at more than 40 universities across the US.

The leading light behind the event, Dr. BH BHarai who is also a leading Oncologist of the US, told AIR that over fifty American senators and several other prominent opinion makers will also be there to listen to the Prime Minister of India.

This is the same venue where a chair was kept empty for Mr.Modi some years back as he was denied visa by the US administration, which is now laying red carpet for him for his second leg of his tour in Washington where the summit of world's largest democracies will take place.
