PM arrives in Kazakhstan

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, on the second leg of his visit arrived Kazakh capital Astana this evening. He is accompanied a high level delegation including the National Security Advisor and officials from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. During his two-day stay in Astana in Kazakhstan, Dr. Singh will have bilateral talks tomorrow with President Nursultan Nazarbayev and his counterpart Karim Massimov on several issues including civil nuclear cooperation, Agriculture and enhancement in trade that Six pacts are likely to be signed during the visit. The Inter-Governmental Agreement in the field of civil nuclear cooperation, agreements for mutual cooperation in the field of Agriculture and Information Technology would also be signed. A agreement is also being signed between ONGC and Kazak oil company Kazmunay Gas for giving 25 percent gas share produced from Satpayev oil basin in Caspian see. A joint statement will also be issued at the end of the visit. He is first Indian Prime Minister to visit Kazakhstan after 2003. AIR correspondent covering the Prime Minister visit reports that Kazakhstan is keen to seek small Indian nuclear reactors to produce more atomic energy. New Delhi is looking into the feasibility of selling such reactors. Kazakhstan is one of the largest uranium producing country in the world and they have been supplying uranium for producing civil nuclear energy to India. Highly placed sources said that more uranium made available to India as New Delhi is also seeking participation in the down streams activities in the Hydro carbon sector, bedsides strengthening political relationship with Kazakhstan as it is get way to central Asia. Prime Minister wrapped up his china visit successfully this morning, he held extensive discussions with all the four leaders of BRICS countries. The third summit of the grouping concluded yesterday Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa called for revamping the global monetary system and signed a pact to use their own currencies in issuing credit or grants to each other. They supported a broad based international currency system providing stability and certainty to the system. BRICS nations also pledged their support for India’s quest for a permanent membership of the UN security council. The declaration said the grouping reaffirms the need for a comprehensive reform of the UN including its security council to make it representative, effective and efficient reflecting the contemporary realities.
