The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh arrived at Nay Pyi Taw this evening on a three day official visit to Myanmar. He was received by the foreign Minister of Myanmar U Wvnna Maung Lwin and Indian Ambassador Dr. V S Seshadri at the International Airport, Nay Pyi Taw. Dr Manmohan Singh will be visiting two major cities of the country including Nay Pyi Taw and Yangon during his visit.
Our correspondent covering the Prime Minister’s visit reports that Dr. Singh was accorded was warm welcome at Airport. Local children representing different states of Myanmar were present at the airport to welcome him. On way from airport to his place of his stay students and children were lined up along the road to welcome the Prime Minister and Indian delegation.
Dr. Singh will be given ceremonial welcome at the Presidential Palace tomorrow. Entire Nay Pyi Taw town new and emerging capital of Myanmar has been decorated nicely for the event. Flags of both the countries are furling at most of crossing, squares and the key points of the town. Massive security arrangements are also in place.
Speaking to media persons at the airport, the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh reiterated that he was looking forward to address a cross-section of Myanmar society and interact with the Indian and Indian-origin community in Yangon on the final day of his visit. He said the shared history and culture of India and Myanmar provides a strong basis for the enhancement of contacts between the people of our two countries. He emphasized that India is committed to a close, cooperative and mutually beneficial partnership with the government and people of Myanmar.
The visit of an Indian Prime Minister to this neighboring country is taking place after 25 years. India views Myanmar as the gateway to South East Asia and central to its Look East policy. More than 10 agreements and Memorandum of Understanding relating to security, infrastructure development, connectivity, trade and investment are likely to be signed during the visit of the Prime Minister. He will hold discussions with Myanmar President U Thein Sein at Nay Pyi Taw on bilateral, regional and other issues of mutual interest. He is also expected to meet Aung San Suu Kyi, Member of Parliament and leader of the National League for Democracy NLD, in Yangon on Tuesday.
The talks between Dr. Singh and Suu Kyi, the leader of the opposition, will take place at a hotel where the prime minister will stay during his brief stay in Myanmar's commercial capital.
