PM approves four-year tenure for Cabinet Secretary

The Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today approved a fixed four-year tenure for the Cabinet Secretary. The new rule will benefit the present incumbent KM Chandrasekhar, who is presently on a three year tenure. Mr. Chandrasekhar, 62, became Cabinet Secretary in Jun 2007. Earlier the tenure of Cabinet Secretary was two years, which could be extended by maximum one year more. But by the new change, the tenure should not exceed four years.
