PM appeals to let run Parl; RS adjourned for day amid demands for Niranjan Jyoti's removal

Both the Houses of Parliament today witnessed uproarious scenes on the issue of sacking of Union Minister Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti. The Rajya Sabha finally adjourned for the day after adjourning twice as opposition members firm on their demand for sacking Sadhvi Naranjan Jyoti from the Council of Ministers. Earlier, Deputy Chairman P J Kurien adjourned the house for half an hour till 2.35 pm following uproar by opposition members who trooped into the well when it reassembled at 2PM.

Amidst uproar, External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj partially read the statement over the Prime Minister’s foreign visits and later laid it on the table of the house. The Upper House witnessed several adjournments on the issue despite appeals by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Leader of the House and Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu to the Opposition to take up regular business. They said the matter should be treated as closed since the Minister had tendered apology.

Later, Prime Minister said he had disapproved her remarks in the Parliamentary party meeting before the issue was raised by the Opposition. Mr. Modi’s appeal came in the backdrop of continued protests by the Opposition during the past two days in the Rajya Sabha. Not satisfied with Mr. Modi’s request the Opposition members stuck to their demand. Congress Deputy leader Anand Sharma and Sitaram Yechury of the CPIM reiterated their demand for the removal of the minister. As the din continued, Chairman Mohammed Hamid Ansari adjourned the House till 2 PM observing that the House is in a very sad state of affairs. He said the members behave in an utterly disgraceful manner. Expressing a serious view on members repeatedly trooping into the well, he said it was unbecoming of them to be in the Upper House.

The situation was no different in the Lok Sabha with members belonging to Congress, Samajwadi Party and Trinamool Congress staging a walk out on the same issue. Earlier, the agitating members demanded a statement from Prime Minister on the issue. Speaker Sumitra Mahajan observed that the Minister Niranjan Jyoti had already tendered her apology for the remarks and the matter was closed on the very first day. She said there was no need to raise the issue again in the House. She tried to bring the House in order to conduct the proceedings but Opposition members remained adamant and staged a walk out. The House continued with usual business.
