The Prime Minister has made an ernest appeal to all sections of people to maintain peace and calm and show respect for all religions and religious beliefs in the highest tradition of Indian culture. In a statement after a high-level meeting held at his residence, Dr. Manmohan Singh expressed the hope that the response of the people to the judgement will be respectful, dignified and do the country proud. He said that the government on its part is fully committed to upholding the rule of law and maintaining peace, order and harmony.While expressing confidence in the traditions of secularism, brotherhood and tolerance of the country, the Prime Minister said that often it is only a few mischief makers who create divisions in the society. He said that the countrymen need to be vigilant and not let such people succeed in disrupting peace and harmony. Dr. Manmohan Singh said that people should particularly careful with regard to rumours that disruptive elements could propagate to create ill will between the communities. He said, the orders delivered by the three Honourable Judges of the Allahabad High Court need to be examined carefully. The High Court has granted leave to appeal to the Supreme Court and the correct conclusion, at this stage, is that the status quo will be maintained until the cases are taken up by the Apex Court. The meeting was attended by the Home Minister P. Chidambaram, Defence Minister A.K.Antony, the Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and the Law Minister Veerappa Moily among others.
