The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has said that the only path for lasting peace and prosperity in Jammu and Kashmir is that of dialogue and discussion. In his opening remarks at the All Party Meeting now in progress in New Delhi, Dr. Singh reiterated that the government is ready for dialogue with anybody or any group that does not espouse or practice violence. He however said that a meaningful dialogue can take place only in an atmosphere free from violence and confrontation and only if there is a calm and public order. He said that those who have grievances against the government have to talk to the administration. Expressing shock and distress at the young people and children joining the protests on the streets, the Prime Minister said that some of these may have been spontaneous but it cannot be denied that some incidents were orchestrated by certain groups. He said that the Centre has asked the state government to restore peace and public order to create congenial conditions for a dialogue process and assured that the government will provide all possible assistance in this regard.The Prime Minister expressed distress over the unfortunate sequence of events during and after Eid particularly in the context of a reported act by misguided persons thousands of miles away.Representatives of all major parties are taking part in the meeting to build consensus on steps to restore peace and order in the state. The meeting convened by the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is being attended by several Union Ministers besides the Congress President Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Gulam Nabi Azad, National Conference leader Dr. Farooq Abdullah, the PDP President Mehbooba Mufti and senior BJP leaders L.K. Advani and Mrs. Sushma Swaraj . SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav, LJP leader Ram Vilas Paswan, JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav, CPI(M) leader Prakash Karat and CPI Leader Gurudas Dasgupta are also participating in the meeting.AIR correspondent says that apart from restoration of peace, package for rehabilitation of the victims of violence and generating employment opportunities for youth and the Armed Forces Special Powers Act are among the issues that are likely to be deliberated at the meeting.
